The great woodworker

The great woodworker (aka my father) has just come in with the results of his latest project. To the untrained eye (mine) it does appear that all he has to show for his toil are two bits of wood, with two other bits of wood screwed onto them to make 2 bits of thicker wood.
He assured me there was a definite purpose to this project, however, he then showed me the next project, which appears (again to the untrained eye) to be a bit of scrap with the letters of the alphabet stamped in it, some of them backwards.
This is that 'modern art' shit I've heard so much about then?
